Pampanga’s Tag as ‘Philippine Christmas Capital’ to Boost Local Economy

The move to designate Pampanga as the “Philippine Christmas Capital” is set to invigorate the local economy.

Senior Deputy Speaker and Representative of Pampanga’s 3rd District, Aurelio Gonzales Jr., introduced House Bill (HB) No. 6933. This bill highlights the province’s rich Christmas customs and the unparalleled skills of its lantern craftsmen, who have played a pivotal role in bolstering the local economy and elevating the province as a hub for cultural tourism.

Gonzales, in a recent statement, emphasized, “This legislation aims to accentuate our province’s stature as a nexus for cultural and Christmas tourism.

This will catalyze economic growth, translating to increased revenue and job prospects for our local inhabitants and those in adjacent regions.”

He further noted the province’s early commencement of Christmas lantern production and sales, starting as soon as September.

The Department of Tourism, as per HB 6933, is tasked with spotlighting the province as the Christmas epicenter in its nationwide and regional promotional endeavors.

Endorsing the initiative, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez remarked that the Kapampangans (Pampanga natives) enhance the festive spirit annually with their renowned and lively lantern-making tradition.

The proposal received unanimous approval in the House of Representatives on Monday, securing a 250-0 vote. It now awaits Senate deliberation.
