Here’s New Clark City’s Game-Changing Plan to Cut Carbon Emissions

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) is aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions in New Clark City, Tarlac, through the introduction of district cooling technology. This initiative is a collaboration with Qatar’s United District Energy International LLC and Japan’s Marubeni Corp.

An MOU has been signed between the BCDA and the two international companies to commence technical and commercial feasibility studies. These studies will assess the potential implementation of low-carbon district cooling technology in the city.

This initiative aligns with BCDA’s aspiration to transform New Clark City into the Philippines’ pioneering smart, resilient, and green metropolis. BCDA President and CEO Joshua Bingcang expressed optimism that the district cooling system would offer an eco-friendly and cost-effective cooling solution to the city’s future inhabitants and businesses.

District cooling technology incorporates centralized chillers, thermal energy storage tanks, and advanced cooling systems. These are seen as more sustainable alternatives to traditional decentralized air conditioning units.

The implementation of such systems in New Clark City is projected to reduce electricity consumption by up to 50%. Additionally, it will lead to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and pollution, enhance air quality and temperature regulation, and optimize the utilization of space.

BCDA, in collaboration with its partners, is also implementing other green initiatives in New Clark City. These include the use of renewable energy sources, promoting active mobility, biodiversity conservation, and allocating 60% of the city’s land for parks, green spaces, and water bodies.
