DOTr: Construction of New Manila International Airport in Bulacan to begin by 2024

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has projected the commencement of the P735-billion New Manila International Airport in Bulacan for the second quarter of 2024.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista reported that the land development for the Bulacan airport project is already over 75% complete.

San Miguel Corporation has previously secured a $1.73-billion agreement with the Philippine branch of Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. for the land development phase of the airport located in Bulakan town.

Bautista anticipates the construction of the airport’s structures to begin as planned in 2024.

For the design and construction of the airport, San Miguel has enlisted the expertise of international firms Groupe ADPi, Meinhardt Group, and Jacobs Engineering, all of which have contributed to the development of renowned airports such as Singapore’s Changi, the United States’ Atlanta Airport, and France’s Charles de Gaulle.

The preliminary designs, some already public, highlight an airport equipped for the future, prioritizing passenger experience and incorporating sustainable technology that aligns with environmental considerations and the needs of the surrounding communities in Bulacan and adjacent areas.

San Miguel has also announced plans to partner with a top-tier airport operator to oversee what is poised to become the country’s leading international gateway.

The ambitious project, which is being constructed on a 2,500-hectare coastal site approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Metro Manila, is being developed at no expense to the government.

Tagged as the Philippines’ most substantial investment, SMC’s Manila International Airport project is touted as a transformative development for the nation’s economy. It promises to alleviate the chronic air traffic congestion in Manila, potentially positioning the Philippines as an attractive tourist and business hub in Asia.

Additionally, the project is expected to create over a million job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the localities it serves.
