DoST Honors 45 Returning Scientists at 9th Annual BSP Convention

The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) celebrated 45 Filipino scientists who returned to the country, honoring them and their host institutions at the 9th Annual Balik Scientist Program (BSP) Convention. The event took place on Wednesday at the Quest Plus Conference Center in Clark, Pampanga.

DoST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of supporting and investing in Filipino scientists. He highlighted their crucial role in national development and noted that addressing complex challenges often necessitates a global perspective and collaboration.

Solidum encouraged local government units, national government agencies, and academic institutions to embrace Filipino scientists and back their initiatives. He underscored the significance of their contributions to the nation’s progress and innovation.

DoST Undersecretary Leah Buendia showcased the achievements of returning scientists. She highlighted the Mobility Vision+ application developed by Dr. Syrus Gomari, a mobility planning expert. The application is aiding the cities of Taguig and Pasig in mitigating traffic issues.

Buendia also acknowledged veterinarian and embryologist Dr. Miguel Mervin Pajate. Dr. Pajate played a pivotal role in the successful second embryo transfer at Isabela State University, showcasing the tangible impacts of the Balik Scientist program.

The BSP is categorized into three durations: short-term (15 days to six months), medium-term (six months to one year), and long-term (one to three years). It facilitates the return of Filipino scientists to contribute their expertise to the nation’s scientific research landscape.

The initiative, established in 1975, has collaborated with 631 scientists and 150 host institutions nationwide. It continues to foster an environment where knowledge and expertise are shared for the country’s advancement in various scientific fields.
