DILG Sets Three-Week Deadline for New Barangay, SK Officials to Take Office

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued a directive to all newly elected barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials, mandating them to officially take charge of their roles within three weeks post-elections.

This transition period is crucial for the handover of barangay assets and properties from the outgoing to the incoming officials.

Failure to comply with the assumption of office could result in administrative charges, the DILG cautioned.

Secretary Benhur Abalos emphasized the significance of the transition, stating that it is essential for the new officials to start their duties effectively.

Abalos highlighted the necessity of a thorough inventory of barangay assets to ensure nothing is amiss upon the new officials’ entry into office, during a statement on Thursday.

Memorandum Circular No. 2023-166 has been disseminated by the DILG to guide the elected barangay and SK officials across the country through the transition.

The circular also instructs outgoing officials to produce a comprehensive report of all village properties, financial statements, and other pertinent documents and accounts.

Abalos reiterated the importance of a smooth transition, which is expected to be overseen by DILG officers, to avoid any confusion or disorder.

He acknowledged that resolving any issues, particularly for those new to governance, might require two to three weeks.

The DILG’s announcement follows the Comelec’s advice that proclaimed winners of the barangay and SK elections should assume their positions immediately after their oath-taking.
